Review of Czelaw Milosz’s “American Ignorance of War”
Personal observations:
Ignorance of Americans? Generally, this was a disturbingly familiar propaganda piece that I recognize as being plagiarized to this day. See most news articles on Iraq (or any conflict) and they follow a pattern; The World is a funked up place, people do really bad things to one another, then ‘Uncle Sam’ is supposed to fix everything magically, else when We (the U.S.A.) can’t, the world can then dump all the blame on Us(a?). Then there is dancing in the streets as Our flag burns and death chants against Us, as all begin predicting and awaiting for Our demise.
The list of this Country’s vehement denouncers in this manner is long; first the British, then other European nations, then Britain again, then other European nations again. Spain, France, Russia, Mexico, Germany, China, and on and on it goes. Who has not ever denounced Us? That My fellow Americans, I would point to as Our truest Friends.
So how is it that so many nations have failed to destroy Us? How is it that so many of modern history’s most malicious tyrants have failed to conquer Us? Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Napoleon, King George, they were all swept aside by You. That’s right, Your genetic stock. Your families that died to get You here. Your families that were tortured and raped, they survived so that You could thrive. You are their lineage, You are their fondest hopes.
The blood and guts of every freedom loving person that ever struggled to survive the journey from across the globe, or was lucky enough to make it, is breathing in You. The greediest, the most creative, the strongest, mentally as well as physically, those were the people that battled to get here. Those were the people that built this Country, that We inherit. Were they perfect? No, they were just people, ordinary everyday people. Probably a lot closer to Us that We may want to admit. But that’s the point and the paradox, “they are in Us” and We are indeed a part of them.
Analytical observations:
Mr. Milosz main assertion is that ultimately America will implode on itself due to a lack of historic sophistication and moral decay. This argument has been used to denounce Our Country since its inception, yet We continue to surmount all obstacles before Us.
A typical derogatory political propaganda objective is to show the hopelessness of life and the world, then blame the ‘great America’ and Our ‘so called wonderful democracy’ for not being the cure all, a “panacea to the Globe”. This was Milosz’s main contention, but with no rational resolution. This argument was used by Monarchism, Communism, Socialism, Nazism, and in this generation by Islamic extremists and sometimes even Our own Democratic Party. Think I’m wrong? Then ask Yourself why does this particular method of operation describe the current position of the “Global Warming” political movement?
America can not fix everything, it is childlike or absurd to even suggest such. America is incredibly resilient and dynamic, capable of greatness, but not perfection. For hundreds of years people have died, and continue to die trying to get into this Country. To My knowledge no other political system can claim this, in history. Let us join together and prey that history continues to prove Our detractors wrong.
