The Republican Party
While the Republican Party was technically speaking the winner of the Civil War, that is if You can call 600,000 or more Americans dead, a still bitterly divided public for generations and decades of political grief and murder ahead of You, “triumphant”. Perhaps it was because of the fact that the Republican Party was to become so radical under these conditions, that the death of Lincoln was indeed most probable, one way or another. Money and power can create many problems.
In a much less blood thirsty revolution, I can remember a modern day ‘radical’ Republican. He too was gunned down in His prime, although His story varies slightly. Medical conditions are better, a very brave secret service agent took a bullet in the gut, and a dear co-worker was shot in the head, never to recover fully. But, with a little luck from the Irish (or so legend has it) managed to survive. His name? Ronald Reagan. And whether or not You believe in His political philosophy, and while He survived when Lincoln did not, it should be said that Mr. Reagan never expended the same zeal as before the assassination attempt.
Therefore, historically He too was politically stymied. Fortunately for Us, He did survive and within these limiting circumstances focused on at least one great accomplishment, ending the cold war. No telling what great work Mr. Lincoln might have accomplished, if given the chance.
