El Dorado courthouse gets initial funding approval
– Bill Lindelof

An $89 million El Dorado County courthouse in Placerville is one of five new courthouse projects to receive initial funding authorization by the state Public Works Board. The funding marks the start of the projects. The authorization gives the Administrative Office of the Courts the green light to start looking for a site for the new courthouse in El Dorado County.

A news release from the Administrative Office of the Courts said expediting the El Dorado County courthouse, as well as the other four in Kings, Los Angeles, Mendocino and Siskiyou counties, saves money on land, design and construction during the current recession. Currently, courts in El Dorado County are housed in the three-story structure built in 1913 downtown and in part of the county government center.

The downtown building houses four courtrooms but lacks a jury assembly area, so potential jurors wait in hallways. Without holding cells, in-custody defendants are held in jury deliberation rooms. The facilities in the county government center also lack security, including separate hallways for in-custody defendants, and have only two single-occupant holding cells, which are frequently over capacity, court administrators say.
